Once again the Quaker battery of Ferguson and Crowley held fast and powered the home club to victory. The twosome combined for six hits and Ferguson held off the Buffalo club to gain his fifth successful effort. Manager Wright noted, "The crowd was cheerful but worry was in the air due to the bad financial news coming from New York City." Panic has set in as large investing companies on Wall Street have failed and many investors have watched carefully in the hopes that their life savings will not be sacrificed to those in control of these companies. It is already being labeled as the Panic of 1884. The base ball game was a momentary reprieve from the disheartening news.

John Crowley had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Charlie Ferguson tossed a complete game
as the Philadelphia Quakers crushed the Buffalo Bisons 18 to 7.

Philadelphia had 9 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning when
they had 5 base hits. That early run support was all that Ferguson(5-1)
required. Philadelphia lit up the scoreboard in the 2nd inning with 9 runs
on 5 hits and the 3rd inning with 7 runs on 7 hits. Philadelphia rapped out
20 hits for the afternoon.

Jim Lillie(0-1) was charged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing
20 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.
