Young Mr. Ferguson had a difficult day with the Chicago nine as his backing fielders allowed the opposition to run free on the bases. The Quakers were inept with the ball making poor plays and taking too many chances that were not successful.Ferguson was a bit off the plate with his pitches and allowed six free passes to the White Stockings. The home team staged a rally in their half of the ninth inning but fell short by one tally. Manager Wright said after the game that he witnessed many of the same discomforting plays that the team fell victim to last season. Shortstop McClellan and third baseman Mulvey did yeoman work with the bat. McClellan had four safe hits and Mulvey hit one over the fence. In the end it was not enough.
