May 1, 1884 marks opening day for baseball in the City of Brotherly love.  The home town side hopes to improve on their less than impressive debut season of 1883, when only 17 of 98 games were victories.  Poor hurling and lack of timely hitting hampered the freshman season for the club after replacing the Worcester nine last year.  Hope springs eternal, especially in the form of young Mr. Charles Ferguson, a 21 year old pitching sensation out of Charlottesville, VA.  Mr. Ferguson recently took the mound for the University of Virginia and was signed to work for the Quakers after a season in Richmond.  Some say they saw him do work for the local college nine at the University of Pennsylvania.  Mr. Ferguson proved up to the task in his debut.  He was able to retire six Detrioters on strikes, made a two base hit upon his first bat, and ran the bases with notable speed.  His appearance generated much excitement among the crowd under bright blue skies.  Perhaps bright skies are ahead for the Quaker nine.
